I have an upcoming show here in Copenhagen. It will be happening in mid Feb (2012). I've started on some rough drawings to get an idea of what the paintings will look like. I seem to be liking the theme of skulls, crosses, and men in masks. It's been difficult to create, maybe it's cause I've had a month and a half off, and the slight pressure of a solo in a few weeks doesn't help. But knowing myself i'll get some idea's I like and role with it. I'm thinking maybe of including some of my sketches in the show as well.

Burning Out, Hitting a Creative Wall

It happens every once in a while, I burn out from doing to much artwork, saying yes to a bunch of projects all at the same time. It's like the mind and the spirit just call it quits. Sometimes the weeks just fly by, and before I know it I"ve been down at my studio 10 hours a day for 6 days of the week. The mind is saying "STOP", unfortunately it means I won't be able to do as much work for a group show in the coming days.....but it happens

In the end it comes down to how I'm orginizing my time, how much breathing space I'm giving myself between things, and what I'm saying yes to. Its hard cause I get all these opertunities and sometimes they fall on top of each other. Sometimes I say yes to something, but don't realize that it's way more work then I thought. I think what I need to do is set some rules for myself. Rule like what is the mimium amount of time I need for a group show, how much time do I need to prepare enough works for a solo art show, can I do this design project on this date. Do I really want to be apart of 'this' project. Even the ever important question, am I being paid enough for the work I'm doing.

It's important for me to have a life besides my art, I need to still make time for friends, time for having fun. It can't all be work. I also need time to be inspirted, and time to think about what I want to create, instead of just producing works under a tight schedual that doesn't allow for new ideas. I don't want to be an art factory, it has to be enjoyable.

I guess we all fail, we all have our limits, and the more I come to understand my own limits, the better I'll be at preventing burn outs. Sometimes saying "I can't do anymore" is ok.

I’m currently working away on a large series that shows my figures tattooed. There is lot’s of detail and lot’s of little things to look at. The tattoos tell the story of the wearer, believes and idea’s of the little characters. Enjoy.

I was asked recently to illustrate a map of Amager for Amar Tar Ordet, an event that will be taking place 19th-25th September. It’s a treasure map. Now this style of Basco5 design was more common of me a few years ago. Everything is hand drawn in black and white, scanned, colored in photoshop and put together in many layers. The style is super colorful and happy. It’ s not very fine “art’ish,” but the clients always seem to love it. I guess it show’s a different element to my creativity, that Basco5 isn’t just birdheads and beards, painted in water colors.

When ever I finish a solo art show it always have about a month with little creative energy. Which is completely understandable when I think about how much work goes into one of them. It is nice when that energy slowly recharges and I'm able to sit and create with out a deadline or a certain theme. It's also nice when I shows over as I don't have to promote, send facebook invites to the point of spamming, which I always feel slightly guilty about. Now it's just time to breath and enjoy making art:) For all the fans, thanks for putting up with my self promotion, means a lot.

Wish I could of gotten some better photos, but this are 2 pieces I did for a live paint in Rådhusen, which is the city hall of Copenhagen. The paintings are about one meter by one meter, and done with acrylic so that's why they look a bit different style wish. I think we were first street/graffiti artist to ever do a live painting at city hall so that's kindah cool.

I'm a doing a huge mural here in Copenhagen from Monday May 10 to Saturday May 15 and I need your help. I'm looking for volunteers to help me paint the wall. It a very fun and rewarding experience. And of coarse it's up to you how long you want to help. The days I need people the most art from May 10, 11 and 12 when were painting the wall white.

May 10th - base coat of primer to wall
May 11th - first coat of white paint to wall
May 12th - second coat of white to wall
May 13th - drawing out forms, painting triangles
May 14th - working on characters

Being a Public Artist is Strange at Times

Being an artist who shows his work to the public creates these strange situations for me. I find that having a fairly consistent flow of people telling me how much they like my work makes it hard for me to judge how good my stuff really is. The compliments can get to my head, making me think I’m “larger” then I am. In Copenhagen, within certain sub cultures that I move in, my stuff is popular, or at least know. It’s common place for people who I have never met before to know who Basco5 is. I end up having repetitive conversations that are new for the people asking questions but a repeat for me. Sometimes it makes me feel like a actor repeating certain lines over and over again. I feel there are certain expectations from people who are fans or admires of my work, if I am not accessible to them, or if I’m not polite to them I am judged harsher and can quickly be labeled the “arrogant artist”. People have built a connection with my art, and so naturally would like to have some short of connection with me, even if it’s just one act of a brief well rounded conversation. I sometimes am forced to be “on” even when I want to hide in a corner, or perhaps am feeling very irritated. I don’t always want to talk about my art, and I don’t always feel like engaging with strangers......and this is a very human feeling.

I think in a strange way I have entered into a social contract by being a public figure (even at the small scale of a street artist), if someone has taken the time to appreciate my art work, or feels inspired by it, then I can offer them the respect and time to listen. Nothing will ruin love for art then a bad experience with the artist. If the creator is unwholesome then the creation will surely start to seem rotten.

I ask though that people be patient with me, if I do not reply to messages, do not agree to projects, or seem stand offish in person.... please know that this is not to hurt or personally insult you. I care, and I read every message, but am human with only so much energy to give, and sometimes that well runs dry. I hope you can still look at my art and see something in it, it represents my hopes, thoughts, and life.....and If it inspires or touches you in any way then it has served it’s ultimate purpose.

Remember that a big part of why I create work is for you, the viewer.....and that is important to me.
